When I route media to earpiece, voip phone calls no longer ring - the phone is silent - is there a fix?

I'm using Soundabout to be able to use a voip app that wants to default always to the back speaker. Setting Soundabout to route the voice to the earpiece results in the voice working properly, but the phone no longer rings - the ring goes silent. My guess is that somehow it wants to send the ring noise to the earpiece as well?
