using external mic for recording video

I want to be able to use my Motorola Atrix HD to record work-quality videos. The picture quality is great but the built-in sound quality is not sufficient.
I bought a nice Audio Technica lapel clip-on mic, and an adapter which supposedly will allow it to work with the headphone jack. But nothing happens. I've tested it on a computer, and it worked, so I don't think its the mic or the adapter.
Will your software app make it so I can use the Atrix HD to create videos with better quality sound?
